Nora Keeling Hersey, 86, of East Orleans, MA, died peacefully on October 24. Born in Walhalla, ND, the first child of Victoria and Harold Keeling, she graduated a year early from high school, and graduated from The University of Minnesota. Later, she completed studies for her Master’s degree in Special Education at The University of Minnesota. Her first teaching job was at the Grey School, a one-room schoolhouse in Lamoure, ND, which is now a historical landmark. She received the North Dakota Teacher of the Year Award. Married to the late Richard Andruss Hersey in 1955, the couple lived in Minneapolis and summered on Cape Cod for 23 years, before moving permanently to Cape Cod. The couple was married for 45 years, until his death in 2000.
I believe your mother and grandmother was my adored first grade school teacher at Fern Hill Elementary School in Minneapolis in 1952-53. If so, I’d like you to know that I have remembered her all these years with great affection and gratitude. She was a warm, creative teacher.
