Big Cat Spotted in the Heights
This summer has had its share of wildlife spotted in and around Nauset Heights. A bear in June, and then multiple shark sightings, normally reserved for Chatham, throughout the summer. Now add a big cat to that list. The couple that spotted the big cat gave this account: My wife encountered a large cat, mountain lion or cougar based on pictures seen online and her experience living in San Diego. Bear Sightings in Nauset Heights
As published in the Cape Cod Times today, Terry Thalman of Nauset Heights Road captured a bear on video as he wandered through his yard in the middle of the night on June 1st. The bear assumed to be the same one spotted on the upper Cape and recently in Orleans, seems to be on the move and visiting a number of neighborhoods. Nauset Shipwreck Photos
According to resident historian William Quinn, the photos below are probably of the wreck of the Montclair, which grounded and came apart in a gale off Nauset Beach on March 4, 1927. It then disappeared until reemerging from Nauset Beach in 1957, then again in November 2010, and once more in November 2011. Holiday Decoration Contest
In recent years the Orleans Improvement Association has organized a holiday decoration contest for businesses on Main Street and homeowners along Beach Road. The theme this year is “A Seaside Christmas”. Some decorations are very original, including the 5-foot starfish outlined in white lights along the hedges in front of the Ships Knees Inn. One decoration on Beach Road depicts the messages from recent protests around the country.
